Some Past Revival Info

West Indian Movement in Wales

My Father arrived in the UK in 1951 my mother arrived in Britain the following year, They came as Missionaries from Jamaica. From what I have been told my parents were used to help set up the first 'Black Pentecostal Church' in Birmingham and later in Wales. As a child the church was full of Holy Ghost Fire. I only remember tangibly sensing The Glory of God twice as a child but it was truly awesome and unmistakeable. Healing, and miracles were part of church life people enjoyed being in church in the presence of God. My dad was real what you see is what you got, He possessed a power that was attractive which could only come from God. At an early age I felt the pull of God on my life but I was too young to fully understand. Let me explain why it was such a great move. Firstly the climate for black people was very difficult most were confined to live in the Bute town area or docks as we call it. Black people were looked down on when they visited churches. it would be unusual for any black minister to hold a position in an established church. Thus the need for West Indian culture to be injected into the local society. Brittan was known as a Christian country back in them days but I remember people throwing stones at our windows and door while we were worshiping the same God that British claimed to worship. When trial and tribulation come people seek God more to help in their situations. Black people were a minority so we would worship and pray together often. My mother was always praying and seeking the face of God no matter what the situation she found herself in. A mother is like glue which keeps the family together and a father should be like a rock which gives strength and support.

Over 60 years has passed since My parents arrived on these shores but still the influence of our culture can be felt. Most of the minister who branched out from the Wells Street Branch have gone home to the places Jesus prepared while the generation left are still waiting to be stirred or are hungry to see a move of God in the land. Wales is in a climate of despair and recession the government has not got the answers that are needed, People cannot talk about Jesus the way the bible talks about Jesus so many of the church leaders preach a watered down Jesus backed up with feel good music and we wonder why Christianity is declining! It is easy to speak and preach a compromise Christianity and make people feel good but was that the message Jesus brought.

Evan Roberts

Evan RobertsBorn 8 June 1878 in Lloughor South Wales in a time when Wales was expecting a revival. It was the start of the new century when a change is always anticipated. Wales was also known as a place of revival the last 1 was in in 1859. Evan himself never claimed that it was him which started the revival he give all honour to Gods Spirit he was a chosen vessel. Without The Spirit of God we are all nothing. Whenever revival occurs someone is always associated with it, there is always a price to be paid for revival Evan prayed for hours every day and never missed a church service from the age of 13 until he was 26 when God worked through him to bring people back to God. According to the books written about him and some friends of his he was a man who wanted to only do what God wanted him to do. There was no need to be recognised as a personality but to let Christ be seen and "be obedient to The Spirit of God" He would not announce where he was going to speak because he did not want people to listen to him but to what God was saying. Evan Roberts was taken to heaven for 3 or 4 months from 1am to 5am where he communed face to face with Almighty God for 4 hours as one talking with a friend. The True Christian life is a life dedicated to God and living as the Spirit of God directs us to live acourding to The Bible.

Welsh Revival

The Welsh Revival was known as the singing revival because when The Spirit of God moved on the congregation they were moved to sing. There are numerous stories about The Welsh Revival so I will just mention a few. The first recognised stir from God on Sunday 14 February 1904 when a young girl named Florie Evan of Newquay who was only saved a few weeks. Testified in a meeting The Pastor being Joseph Jenkins saying “I love the Lord Jesus with all my heart" This was brought the nearness of the presence of God. A man from Cardiff was praying and seeking revival Seth Joshua. At Newcastle Emlyn Seth was preaching and in his prayers he used the words bend us. The Holy Spirit moved on Evan to say bend me. This personal realisation made all the difference and it seemed as if the floodgates of heaven opened and he received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. I would like to give a testimony I heard from an America minister who spoke about a lady from Wales who lived in The USA. he said that the lady was saved in the Welsh revival of 1904 as a child she decided to take a shortcut home from school and she walked through an alley as she was walking she felt as if she walked into the thick presence of God and there and then she give here heart to Jesus. Thats what I would love to see again a revival where God is everywhere. Charlie Stacey is a Welsh minister who was friends with the minister who baptised in water the Jeffery brothers who were converted in the Welsh Revival of 1904. George Jeffery went on to pioneer The Elim Pentecostal movement which helped change the UK and is still a powerful ministry today.
